CHAPTER EIGHT

I wasted no time once Carter left, “Okay, Ladies. It’s almost noon and the arraignment is at ten o’clock in the morning. That gives us less than twenty-four hours to solve this mystery.”

“Where do we start?” Gertie asked.

“You heard Carter, we need a suspect and a motive. Right now, the best theory we have is that someone on the bus did this. We need to determine who it is, and why they wanted to punish Celia, the motive.”

“We also believe that it was Celia’s Toyota RAV4 that cut off the bus and led to the damage,” Ida Belle said.

“That could be the motive,” Gertie agreed. “Someone on the bus may have gotten his nose bent out of joint because of the delay and then saw Celia’s car in Sinful.”

I nodded, “Sam told us the bus had a fishing excursion the day before on the Tennessee River near Chattanooga. He also said a few bus passengers caught a Blue Catfish. Maybe that same tourist was also packing the M-100s.”

“I follow you,” Ida Belle said. “The person who caught the Blue Catfish would have also cleaned it and stored it on ice. If they cleaned the fish, they may have kept the fish guts.”

“Yeah, they could, but why would they?” Gertie asked.

“I don’t know why. I’m just speculating.”

“It’s the best we have to go on,” I said.

“I’m going to call Sam,” Ida Belle said. “He and I seemed to hit it off and he said he would help us if he could.”

“Good idea. I’m going to call my former partner, Agent Ben Harrison.”

“Why would you call him?” Gertie asked.

“Because Carter said the company that made the M-100s is under Federal investigation. Maybe I can find out something useful. I’m taking off now. Let’s circle back a little later this afternoon.”

“Thank you for everything you’re doing, Fortune,” Gertie said.

I smiled at her, “I know you’d do the same for me.”

I wasted no time once I was in the car. I used my handsfree Bluetooth device to call Ben Harrison. He answered on the first ring.

“Fortune! How are you? It’s been a while.”

“It has. How are things going in Washington?”

I hadn’t spoken to my old partner in months. Even though I felt rushed, I spent a few minutes catching up. I felt a little relief when he cut to the chase.

“I know you well enough to know this is not a social call,” he said. “Do you need my help?”

“You know me too well. Yes, I need help.”

“I’m at my desk now. I’ll see what I can do.”

“There is a company called Demon Light. They are believed to be making illegal fireworks. I was told they are under Federal investigation.”

“Hold on, Fortune.”

I heard Ben pecking on his keyboard.

“Goodlettsville, Tennessee?” he asked.

“That’s them. What can you tell me about them?”

“They are indeed under Federal investigation by the ATF for manufacturing and distributing illegal fireworks. I have very limited information on the database. The ATF is not feeding us much.”

“I understand. Anything might help. What’s there?”

“The company was founded in 1992 by a man named Edward Longyear,” he said.
